ORPHAN WORKS ACT OF 2008
To many artists -- particularly graphic artists and illustrators -- the Orphan Works Act of 2008, now under consideration by the House and Senate, threatens artists’ copyright protection. There’s a lot of both thoughtful dialogue and hysteria going on over the Internet about it now. According to illustrator Brad Holland, “ You May Lose All the Rights to Every Piece of Art You Have Ever Created!” A calmer voice is that of the Graphic Artists Guild, http://capwiz.com/gag/home/, which is working with the congressional committees to change some aspects of the bill. Meanwhile, because of what may be at stake, every artist should become familiar with this bill,to know when to take action and what action to take. To find out more about this, go to www.illustratorspartnership.org/01_topics/article.php?searchterm=00185 or just google “orphan works.”
