Japanese-Style Patina Workshop
This workshop is a combination of hands-on activities and demos that teach effective patina methods. The goal is to produce durable, jewelry-quality colorations on metal. The methods used in this class are low toxicity, and yield glossy or semi gloss surfaces that tolerate handling and wear.
The primary approach demonstrated and discussed is based on Japanese traditions including the use of daikon radish for preparation and laying down a base patina prior to the application of additional chemistry to produce a range of effects. However, Western-style chemistry is also included. The methods taught can be applied to all patina applications.
To assure successful patina development, students will learn proper cleaning and texturing methods.
Prior to applying the patina formulas students will etch their samples using a renewable, environmentally considerate mordant.
Traditional Japanese formulas such as Rokusho, as well as contemporary western formulas are used and discussed. In addition to applying chemistry with brushes, other methods will be shown such as fuming and packing.
Students will work with copper; silver, brass, and the traditional Japanese alloys Shakudo and Shibuichi will be shown.
Methods for using patinaed metals in jewelry design, and finishing options are demonstrated.
